What is Pat Benatar doing on my video card?

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

So I’m in the middle of doing a minor studio up-fit, a short list of tasks that includes replacing my video card. I’m going to a new card that allows more of the ‘heavy lifting’ of high definition video to be processed directly video card’s GPU. Previously I had both a video card (the one you see below) and a separate third-party card that’s specifically designed to output high definition video through its HDMI output. Now I can do everything with one off-the-shelf card. This frees up resources on my computer to run more virtual instruments. More music = more fun.

:)

As I removed the card I noticed the emblem on the built-in fan unit. I immediately thought “what’s Pat Benatar doing on my video card?” ATI has a reputation of using highly idealized CGI images to hock their wares, and Pat Benatar definitely works as a model. But if she took a notion to sue ATI/AMD for hotness infringement, I’d say she has a pretty strong case.

That said, if someone wants to buy a slightly used video card (in full working order) I’ll sell it to you for a song – and the pretty picture on the side is gratis.

TLA goes Blu Ray in the name of data (and sanity) protection

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Well – I knew it had to happen, eventually. The DVD backups were becoming just *too* cumbersome for the amount of data I was archiving off every week. That, and a technical rub with getting an HD feature out the door for a screening on Friday left me with little choice but to upgrade one of my systems to include a Blu Ray disc burner.

One of the things that happens when data backups become too much of a hassle is that you tend to slide a bit on discipline in keeping a regular backup schedule. I have a nice big NAS drive attached to a Gigabit network – with a hands-free backup that writes new and changed files to an archive on that drive. No worries – right? Wrong. What if that NAS fails? Well, guess what – it happened to me a few months ago, and it likely cost me a project assignment in the process. So now it’s time to *grow up* and become really diligent about creating and managing backups like the rest of the adult world – and not rely on a major failure to tell me whether or not my data (and retention practices) are in good shape.

I could have gone with a dual-layer DVD burner, but for the difference in price for a BD burner it’s too easy of a decision to upgrade that part of my studio. Plus, my current project needed to find a place to burn a 1080p version of their film for a screening on Friday, and I had all of the software tools to burn the disc here (Sony’s DVD Architect 5.0). So now I get to add another chapter to the saga of this last-minute project – but in truth, this is something that’s been a long time in coming.

Once the dual-layer BD burners come down in price – I’ll put a burner on the *other* machine in my studio. For now, I’m happy to have this long-needed tool in my arsenal. It’s an incredibly important creative tool – if only for its ability to let me get a good night’s rest knowing that I’ve got up-to-date copies of all my projects in storage offline. The fact that I get to walk in to a screening room on Friday to show off my latest mix with video at 1080p resolution is just icing on the cake. :)

SmartAV Tango videos showing Nuendo/Cubase integration

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

A quick FYI – for anyone that’s wondering what I’ve been up to lately…

I just posted some Tango videos showing Nuendo/Cubase integration, which I’ve been working on for some time. Bear in mind – they are *not* streaming videos - but should be downloaded and played locally on your own machine. They were shot in HD and I encoded them to a pretty generous 720p data rate. At 4+ minutes per clip, the file sizes are *not* trivial. You should use the “Save Link As…” or like feature in your web browser.

Also bear in mind that I encoded these *both* in mp4 and WMV9 formats – if you have QT7 player or other handler that will play back H.264 encoded files – I recommend you grab the mp4 versions of these files since they’re smaller.

Here’s the list of vids.

Nuendo Chapter 1
Track Selection & Ergonomic Spreads
mp4 WMV

Nuendo Chapter 2
Automation
mp4 WMV

Nuendo Chapter 3
Transport, Jog & Edit
mp4 WMV

Nuendo Chapter 4
Mix & Control Room
mp4 WMV

Cubase Chapter 1
Transport, Navigation & Zoom
mp4 WMV

Cubase Chapter 2
Rotary Encoders – EQ
mp4 WMV

Cubase Chapter 3
Rotary Encoders – Plugin Control
mp4 WMV

These will probably be up on the SmartAV site in a few days. Also, I expect that streaming versions will show up on YouTube.

I already see a minor tweak I need to make to one of the Cubase videos for a slight color correction issue that skewed the colors on the opening card (but the rest of the video is fine). If anyone finds an issue with any of the files (save for local download issues), or if you have any questions or comments, please let me know. Thanks!

New Tango demo videos coming from TLA

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

This is going to be a lot of fun. I’ve been asked by the folks at SmartAV to do a handful of videos that relate to music and post production working with Cubase and Nuendo. This is really exciting – one, because I’m a geek and love talking about and showing off gear, and two because there’s a lot of cool stuff going on “under the hood” with the SmartAV Tango that really sets it apart from other consoles – and that’s just cool.
:)

So look for updates on this as the project progresses. I hope to have everything “in the can” by the Thanksgiving holiday – barring any last-minute schedule snags.

I’m still getting my head wrapped around the SmartAV Tango.
